Britt Harrison, Artist

How did you become an artist and what inspires you as an artist?

So I’ve been making work since I was a young girl. It was one of the only things that could pacify me at that stage in my life, and since then I’ve been studying art and went to art school. I have remained committed to being an artist. It’s one of the more engaging ways to work with ideas. It almost feels like I can be doing my own research and diving deep into these concepts while creating my own world at the same time.

How do you think art helps with mental illness?

I think it’s incredible for my focus. It’s been one great exceptional outlet for myself. It’s really one of the only ways to calm my brain. But I think being able to be transported away from yourself and dive into a different person’s world can be really exceptional. My work has touched upon mental health in the past and there’s a lot of really great artists out there who are working in this vein and to see a piece that allows you to feel “seen” and understood is really an incredible experience.

What’s your goal as an artist? What do you want people to feel when they experience your artwork?

I’m actually hoping for a meditative and a serene experience. I’ve been battling with a lot of depression so I’ve been making work that is coming from a more peaceful place. I want people to feel present and in their bodies, focusing on this really beautiful atmosphere that I’m trying to create with my work.
