Andrew Samuel Harrison, Artist

What differentiates yourself from other artists? Why is your art special?

A lot of what I do comes from living with a limb difference. I have this rare genetic disorder called Poland syndrome which gives me a unique perspective.

How has your disability affected your role as an artist?

I think even though I’m a caucasian white male, my limb difference gives me a sort of outside perspective on certain things. That and my combination with a lack of formal training. I’m a self-taught artist. Those things come together and are parallel in an interesting way.

How do people typically react to your limb disorder? Do you think people are “scared?”

I’m about to be thirty years old, so I’ve dealt with it my whole life. Most of my life I was ashamed of it and wanting to hide it.

How do you embrace it?

Through my art and at times playing music and performing. Making myself be in front of people.

What do you play?

Guitar and drums.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve seen at the Armory show so far?

Crazy question. I just went around one lap. The group New Red Order was cool. There was a wheat pasted wall that I really liked.
