Marcus Glitteris is a multi-media artist with an infectious energy. We talked at Satellite Art Fair about his rave-inspired installation and his art’s connection to his identity.

Tell me your name.

My name is Marcus Glitteris. It’s the word “Glitter” with an “is” at the end of it.

Will you tell me a little bit about this piece that we’re standing in front of?

Sure. We’re here at the Satellite Art Show, an art fair in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I’m doing an installation piece called “Club U.F.O.” It’s about the energy of nightclubs, raves, fluorescence, black light, stars, and magic. There are paintings and mannequins washed in fluorescent energy. All of my art is “happy art.” It’s all fluorescent, shiny, bright, and beautiful, and it’s my voice. I hope you like it.

What do you think is important about making happy art?

What’s important is making sure that your art is connected to who you are. I can’t paint Leyla’s story; I can only paint my story. It’s uniquely catered to me. My story looks like this.

Talk to me about the story.

We have to create a lot of artwork to understand what our unique voice is. You have to make a painting, do a show, make another painting, and do another show. You have to create works on paper, go to art galleries, attend artist talks, visit museums, go to art fairs, and attend friends’ shows. Little by little, you try to understand what all this means to you as an artist. For me, it starts with fluorescent color. From fluorescent color, we move to materials. There’s flexi, bouncy balls, paintings, and ribbon. There are construction materials, which I have an eye for. This mannequin is named Baby Magenta. She’s super cool and wants to be here with everybody. This one is named Patricia after a friend. I bought these clothes at her store. Then we have Donna and Karen, two beautiful ladies. I met them, and they gave me a ride home.
