Fati Jafri, Creative Director/Artist

What’s your stance on women and facial and body hair? Do you think women should shave their legs? What’s in right now?

I’m always a believer in doing what you want. I think personal choice and preference is really important and that we should remove the concept of “trends” from personal choice. That being said, I do think (well not leg hair that much), but for facial hair, the boundaries on what’s appropriate is changing. I have a unibrow and I used to thread them all the time and a little baby mustache that I’ve been letting grow out. And I actually think it looks kind of cute and people have been complimenting me about it.

Who’s one of your art icons that you look up to?

Barbara Kruger. She’s the person they jacked the Supreme logo from. She’s truly an icon.

As a creative, how do you want society to perceive you?

What’s interesting is that for my day job I’m a creative director. I work with magazines and advertising so I spend so much time thinking about how others perceive me. Because of that, in my art practice I literally don’t care at all and I make whatever I want. In several years of doing that I definitely have developed a “style” and I think my work is dark in its message but it’s quite colorful, bright, playful and child-like so there’s a dichotomy. I think the way I would say that is that I want people to get sucked in a bit where they think “this looks fun and approachable”, and then hitting them with a very intense, dark and provocative message.

Where do you go shopping? Because I love your dress.

I go shopping mostly at thrift stores and local brands from Brooklyn artists. Or from elsewhere like from people I follow on Instagram. I’m 5’10 so if I need to wear jeans I’ll buy them at Madewell because nothing vintage is going to fit me
