WHO?
Maureen Paley was originally called Interim Art, opened in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house in London’s East End. It moved to its current space in Bethnal Green in 19999 and was renamed for its founder in 2004. A second space, Morena di Luna, opened in Brighton (Sussex) in 2017. She launched the careers of Wolfgang Tillmans, Gillian Wearing, Liam Gillick, and Rebecca Warren.
WHY?
Who doesn’t love a small powerful lady with a foot-tall beehive hairdo, an endangered Mid-Atlantic accent, with a penchant for young punks teetering between art and professional badassery? The secrets are all in that hair…somewhere.
